Kind of a diary entry

I played a show in LA last night, somewhere in between a living room show and club show. It was in the front room of an office building which sounds like a terrible vibe but they gave me twinkly lights and made pillows shaped like their bottles and people sat on fake grass. The only thing that was amplified was my voice.

As always, with living room shows, we laughed and cried about the hilariously bad decisions we make. We talked about changes I've gone through and I gave some advice while also acknowledging that my life is not "fixed" now that I've moved to LA and have gotten a little healthier. My realest advice is listen to yourself. You know what you need if you let yourself want it. You don't even have to say it out loud, just allow yourself to acknowledge what you want. 

I think the reason I get so emotional at shows it because I come face to face with a bunch of humans and see just how many people grapple with the same desire to be happy while not totally knowing what will do that long term. 

I want to feel good in my body, strong and comfortable in my own skin. I want to laugh with my friends and trust my community. I want clean water, nutritious food, and a home that has what I need/is cute. I want sex that feels amazing and music to which I can dance, cry, and chill. I want to share my music with people. I want to feel connected to people. I want people to like each other. 

I think everyone deserves all those things. You do. I think I do. I'm working on it.

The first song to be recorded for the next record is kind of about that I guess. How I've always felt in competition with people, scrutinized by some weird negative force, maybe society? When really, we could all be working together to make life good, and have fun.  Joanna Katcher (the producer of Some Feelings) and I started recording on Friday and I ~*THINK*~ I can show it to you by Tuesday before this all ends. It's called "It's Easy"

Yesterday We hit $60k which is DOUBLE THE GOAL. Anything above this means I'm going to be able to make music videos and promote the shit out of the record.

Lately, I’ve been tackling some of the half written songs, filling out verses, combining 2 songs into 1, and recording demos. I have about 7 totally written songs and then another 5 that could be contenders but I’m kind of expecting that I’ll write some brand new all-stars once we start recording. 3 of the tracks off Some Feelings were written in the car on the way to the studio.

I’ll be recording a track with a potential producer on the last 3 days of this kickstarter soooo it’s gonna be a strong finish. I feel like I shouldn’t say who it is yet but, I’ve covered one of the bands he’s produced.

Some FAQs

Can I get multiple CDs? 

• Yeah! I use backer kit to send out the surveys at the end of the project. They collect your address, shirt size, or any other info that’s relevant to your reward level. They also give you the option to add things to your cart from a menu so you can totally add an extra CD or vinyl or shirt

Can I just get a download and a shirt? 

• See the last answer, YES, you can add a shirt BUT I’ve decided to put the names of everyone from the shirt level and above on the back of the shirt. Get it? Because you’re my BACKers? I’d love to do everyone but it’s not possible to print that many names that small. I also wish I could keep track of the shirt people from backerkit but it would be super messy and I’ll need the info sooner than the surveys take to come back.

Will the vinyl be signed?

• YEA, sorry I didn’t specify that

What are the ukulele specifics?

• -It's a spruce-top, concert ukulele by Kala with aquila strings. I've been playing mine for about a year and a half with a pick so I've scratched the laser design a little but it's holding up pretty well. Here's one of my favorite doodle ukes from the last kickstarter

Update from the road

Being on tour and running a kickstarter at the same time is wild. I've never felt love and support this viscerally.

This record is officially happening and it's because of you. Surpassing the goal means I get to relax about the budget and studio time and see what happy mistakes I can make with that kind of freedom.

The living room shows are proving once again why I love them so much. I love belting out songs from Some Feelings. I have some oldies in there too, most people still know the words

I even met the mysterious girl who made me cry from my last update. She walked up in the merch line and said "so...last week my sister secretly filmed me while I was talking about you"

I made her take a Polaroid with me and sign it

I've also started trying out some new material on the road. One song, "Boys Who Follow Me" is gonna be a Motown inspired, background vocal heavy track once I get in the studio but I've been doing it in living rooms a capella and getting the crowd to snap with me.

SO NEW GOAL: If we hit 1,250 backers before the end of this tour (jan 21) ill film it and post it here privately, for backers only.

Live Stream Tonight: Talk With Me

I'll be going on Kickstarter Live tonight. This will be the first but it definitely won't be the last one so don't worry if you can't make it. I'm just trying to check out the format and talk to you guys.
